So far we've seen one review which found evidence for some performance increases from using compression garments and last week we looked at three studies which concluded that there were no benefits. This week, we'll examine the middle ground to see if it can shed any more light on the matter.

Last week, in Part 2 of our series investigating compression wear, we looked at a study which showed performance benefits for athletes wearing compression gear. This week in Part 3, we find three studies which contradict the Effect of Compression Stockings on Running Performance in Men Runners. Published Journal of Strength & Conditioning study and they conclude that there was no significant benefit for athletes wearing compression garments.

Before we dig into the data, first of all let’s examine how compression garments including tights & leggings, sleeves, socks and rash guards work. In this article, we are only investigating sports apparel and their performance enhancing properties.

Rash guards are worn as a second skin to protect the body from irritation and from the environment. Constructed from technical fabrics, the rash guard wicks away sweat from the skin. As the fabric draws sweat in, it’s lightweight fibres increase the surface area encouraging more sweat to evaporate.
